Finishing strong in challenging times can feel like having to give it all you got when you feel like there is nothing left to give. It can also feel like another big push will follow the next big push.
If you’re feeling the pressure mounting – I know the feeling, and I am right here with you.
Here are some things that have done that have helped me set my mind to finishing strong.
1. Taking inventory of the things I know are good
This means being honest with myself about the really good things, as well asmy strengths and skills.
I find that honestly is becoming increasingly important to me. If there is dishonesty during chaos and shift, it builds distrust, and trust is the capital you need most.
2. Chose your allies
My professional network is highly valuable to me. I love the connection, the professional development, and the impact we have on one another personally and professionally.
Your inner circle of friends and close allies are the board of directors in your life. Protect those relationships, stay present, and stay open. There is nothing better than a few trusted people who can hold the mirror up for you.
3. There is a lot to be said about developing strong, healthy habits.
Lately, I find that part of healthy habits is creating micro habits that I can feel good about. What small thing can I do that makes a measurable difference?
Here are a few of mine:
Set reminders to drink water
Start my day by saying a short prayer – (usually, it’s for my girls, my team, my friend – I find that sometimes it’s easier to pray for others than it is to pray for yourself).
One more thing on finish strong – it’s not just the good habits that will serve you well, in my observation of myself and others – it’s the bad habits that will weigh you down.
The bad habits are like baggage; you accidentally picked it up, and instead of leaving it behind, you hoist it on your back and pretend that things are just as they are meant to be. This situation tends to worsen when surrounded by others who are sporting baggage (bad habits) and somehow make it look cute. “No, big deal, I am not as bad as she/he is.”
Habits, more than anything else, are directly connected to how well we finish. Putting one foot in front of the other is a habit that takes tremendous discipline, vision, perseverance, and strength. Ditch the baggage that doesn’t serve you, cry it out and work it out, but stay the course.
